South Korean filmmaker Chung Ji-young has followed Unbowed, his powerful film on judicial misconduct, with a searing look at repression under Chun Doo-hwan’s military rule in the 1980s. Released in its home country at the end of last year, National Security is among the most remarkable films to come out of South Korea in recent years. Since South Korea’s film industry ranks among the most vibrant and creative, that is another way of saying that National Security is a major event in world cinema.
